Seed is often the single biggest barrier smallholder farmers face: too expensive to buy outright, and too easy to counterfeit when they can't.
Farmers' Outgrower Foundation (FOF), a Chipata-based outgrower enterprise established in 2016 and led by Whytson Sakala, took that problem head-on. Through EDGE project support, FOF partnered with the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute and ICRISAT to multiply drought-resilient legumes and sorghum, bred to meet high germination standards and hold up under climate stress.
Better seed on its own doesn't build resilience, though. FOF built the systems around it. Agronomy masterclasses, delivered through a lead-farmer model, cover weeding intervals, moisture checks, and financial literacy. A zero-cash credit scheme lets farmers access certified seed and inputs on loan, repaid at harvest when FOF buys back the crop, cutting out both the upfront cost and the counterfeit-seed risk. Local buying depots replace exploitative brokers with fair prices and payment on the spot.
FOF now reaches over 4,500 smallholder farmers across Zambia, with women making up 75% of participants and youth 10%. Household economic security sits at the centre of the model, not as an afterthought.
This is the difference between aid that runs out and supply chains built to hold up. FOF is now positioned as a reference model for scaling outgrower schemes across sub-Saharan Africa.
